dclGold was discovered in South Africa in 1886. It was found in a place called the Witwatersrand, in Central Transvaal. There was no longer conflicting claims to the area, as it was the case in relation to diamonds, because the teritory where they were found belonged to the Transvaal government. The discovery of gold mines dwarfed the diamond discovery. After the discovery of gold, Johannesburg mushroomed, and within a few years of its existance, it rose to become the larges city in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Almost overnight, the Southern Africa shifted from Kimberely and the British coloniesto the heartland of the heartland of the Boer of the Boer republic. Transvaal became a wealthy prosperous state after the discovery of Gold, under the growing white population. The industrial economy expanded due to the resurrecting interest in the Transvaal- the gold mines.
